The main attraction of Devon is that it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It offers the visitor adelightful range of scenery such as rolling countryside and hedgerows, thatched cottages, attractive fishing villages, tiny covesand rugged cliffs. Although a very popular tourist area Devon remains largely unspoiled, with an 'olde worlde' charmepitomised by picturesque old villages with cosy inns and thatched tea rooms serving traditional Devon cream teas.
The North Devon coast has a selection of sandy beaches and small fishing villages nestling in between the rugged cliffs; it is anexcellent area for walking. Walkers can also follow the the Tarka Trail a 180 mile long route around North Devon, includingstretches of the coastal path.
The south coast has a range of popular seaside resorts, such as Torquay and Paignton, with good sandy beaches.
The centre of Devon is rural and less frequented by tourists, the appeal of this area is in the beautiful, unspoiled countrysideand wildlife.
Devon has two National Parks, Exmoor and Dartmoor. Exmoor is a high moorland plateau with beautiful scenery and a variety ofwildlife, including red deer and wild ponies. Dartmoor is known for its spectacular landscape of rugged tors, hills and lakes andits ancient villages. It is ideal for walking, cycling and riding.
