Local Attractions
- BALMORAL CASTLE (30 mins)
- Summer holiday home of the royal family with castle and grounds open to visitors. Nearby Ballater is an attractive village - with shops "By Appointment" to the royal family. It is set among the forests and mountains of the beautiful Dee Valley.
- GLENLIVET AND GLENFIDDICH WHISKY DISTILLERIES (60 mins)
- There are many distilleries in the area because the mountain water that whisky so depends upon, is so rich in flavour and minerals here, but these are the most famous. The process is fascinatingly simple and the free dram an attractive incentive.
- ABERDEEN CITY (45 mins)
- Originally an ancient fishing port and university town, Aberdeen has become rich on oil. The "Houston" of the north breathes money and new technology with the largest heliport in the world and seaport to match but its ancient traditions live on.
- CRAIGEVAR AND CRATHIE CASTLES (20 mins)
- If you like to see Scottish castles these are both excellent examples and very different in character. Both are owned and managed by the National Trust. Crathes also has beautiful and extensive gardens as well as a restaurant and garden centre.
- LOCHNAGAR MOUNTAIN AND THE DEE VALLEY (0 to 60 minutes)
- The drive from Aboyne to Braemar along the Dee valley is one of the most spectacular in the world, winding among the pine forests, with the snow capped mountains beyond. No wonder Queen Victoria fell in love with it and built her castle here.
